Switchblade – PS4 | Review

Switchblade by Lucid Games is everything I didn’t know I wanted in a Moba game.  In fact, I will admit that I am normally not a fan of these types of games at all.  The winning formula that even turned this reviewer’s cold heart around is all the heart put into the game.

By design, Switchblade is a free to play arena-based 5v5 vehicular shooter that combines intense combat with an endless amount of strategic choices that you will make on the fly.  You have the ability to switch between 2 different styles of vehicles to both dish the pain out as well as help keep your team alive.

There are 5 classes which you can choose. The Armoured Class is best for protecting your mobs as they try to destroy the opponent’s tower; it is not meant to do damage so much as to be a bullet sponge.  The Artillery Class is a mean machine that can dish out massive damage, however, its speed and health are very minimal, so it can die quickly.  The Fighter Class is generally the best to start out with because its stats are pretty much equal.  They are great for all purposes.  The Scout Class is very fast and has decent strength, but there is not much to be said for health.  They can zoom in on a battle and zoom out when need be.  Lastly, there is the Tank Class.  This is exactly what it sounds like; it is slow, heavily armoured and can pack a mean punch.

Knowing all the classes and what works best for each player will be key when forming teams with friends.

During combat, you will gain experience points and money while defeating foes on the battlefield.  These can be used to buy upgrades as well as shorts buffs to help you and your team.  Some buffs will last seconds, while the higher priced items will remain through the match.

Experience points level you on the field.  As you level, you can upgrade your abilities.  Each character has their own ability unique to them.  You have the ability to level up one or two abilities that you use more frequently instead of all of them.

Matches are 20 minutes long and have an overtime limit of 5 minutes, so this is not the type of game that you can pick up and only play for a short time.  As it is all online, you will not be able to pause.

As of right now, there are three ways to play the game:

Quick Play – this mode automatically matches you with opponents of a similar skill level.
Co-OP vs. AI-Practice – this mode allows you to play with other human players against a team of AI bots.
Competitive Ranked – in this mode, you have an opportunity to play a competitive game and increase your Season Rank.

Final Impressions

Switchblade is a refreshing and exciting way to immerse yourself into a Moba game that feels like the offspring of Overwatch, Twisted Metal and League of Legends.  As I mentioned, I am not normally a fan of these types of games, but I have no doubt that this will be the next big Indy game!  Fantastic work Lucid Games!
