Holiday Gift Guide – Nintendo Switch

It’s getting cold, the shops are rammed, and the radio is playing all the same songs – it must be Christmas. However you celebrate the holidays, we’re here to offer you some buying advice on all three of the major consoles. Whether you’re looking to buy one for a loved one, or you want a good idea of what to buy for your shiny new console, read on! This article is bought to you by our sister site DealsfromAtoZ.co.uk.

The Console

Unlike PlayStation or Xbox that offer different consoles with varying price tags, the Nintendo Switch is the same in every way from every other Switch except for appearance. The standard grey model may seem sleek, but we’re particularly fond of the Neon Red/Neon Blue combo. You can also grab some great bundles, including ones that include Diablo 3Smash Bros Ultimate, or Pokemon: Let’s Go. With two of the “Joy-Con” controllers included, you’ll all set for local multiplayer for two people.

Must Have Accessories

Don’t panic if you can’t grab the colour you’d like – you’re able to grab spare Joy-Cons separately, so you can mix and match to your heart’s content.

One definite accessory you’ll want to grab shortly after purchasing your console is a MicroSD card. The Switch has 32GB of internal storage which will keep you going, but if you plan to buy digitally you may want to expand your storage.

We recommend grabbing a case if you plan to carry your shiny new console around. We recommend this one from personal experience.

Side note: If you or your loved one plays a lot of Fortnite or something similarly competitive, it may be worth investing in a Pro-Controller. It isn’t necessary, but it improves the experience of almost any game you play with it.

Games

The Switch isn’t even two years old, but its software library is incredible. You really can’t go wrong with any of the following:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Widely regarded as the Switch’s best game, explore a Hyrule that feels like a living, breathing world.

Super Mario Odyssey – One of the greatest platforming titles of all time, Odyssey is built for fun and features dozens of hours of content and secrets to uncover.

Mario Kart 8: Deluxe – Use power-ups to reach the chequered flag first in the biggest Mario Kart yet. Great for families and settling scores.

Pokemon: Let’s Go – Catch them all for the first time on Switch, with simplified controls and beautiful visuals.

Smash Bros Ultimate – Over seventy fighters from all over video games fight to throw each other off of the level in the Switch’s best-selling game to date.

Super Mario Party –  great for up to four players, Super Mario Party is full of mini-games that take advantage of the Joy Con’s motion controls and rumble features.

Ones You May Have Missed

The following are great titles you may not have spotted, often only available as digital downloads. We can wholeheartedly recommend these:

Into The Breach – a strategy game perfect for playing in chunks, Into The Breach is one of the best games of 2018.

Guacamelee 2 – A hilarious platformer, Guacamelee 2 sees you battle through the undead one skeleton at a time to save the Mexi-verse.

Hollow Knight – A tough journey through an insect world, Hollow Knight is not an easy game but is certainly worthwhile.

Dead Cells – Battle through randomly generated levels to earn new gear which makes each play through different.

Stardew Valley – Easily one of the most addictive games on any platform, cultivating a farm and selling your wares to the townspeople may not sound exciting but it’s difficult to overstate how good Stardew Valley is.

Golf Story – Part golf game, part RPG, work your way to golf pro by completing quests and levelling up.

So there you have it, enough to get you started with the Switch.
